Flu Season and Essential Oils

As a yogi and holistic health practitioner, I have become fascinated with the role essential oils can play in our health and well-being. Mr E knows I can’t go to sleep at night without my diffuser running. And whenever I get sick, the I turn to the oils before I go to the medicine cabinet. Which is why I’m thrilled to start a new guest post series on Nutrition Nuptials from essential oils expert, Lauren Clyne. Today she’s talking about all about how to battle flu season with essential oils.

You may have heard that this flu season has been one of the worst. Not only that, but the flu vaccine effectiveness is being reported at somewhere between 10% and 30%. That hardly gives me warm and fuzzy feelings, but have no fear, that doesn’t mean we have to suffer as we have safe and effective alternatives at our fingertips.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE ESSENTIAL OILS AND ARE THEY REALLY ESSENTIAL?

Essential oils are all the buzz these days, but what are they?  Essential oils are natural, aromatic compounds that come from plants and can be used for a variety of health benefits.  However, not all essential oils are created equal.  When using essential oils, you want to make sure you ask about the testing that is done on the oil to ensure only the highest quality that is free of contaminants.

Doterra essential oils are of the highest quality on the market. Every batch of oils goes through third party testing to ensure they are free of chemicals, pesticides, fillers, etc. This is extremely important given that we are using essential oils to support our health. Therefore after much research I decided to only use Doterra essential oils on my family.

BE ON GUARD

Doterra has many fabulous oils, but I want to focus on the two must-haves this flu season: On Guard and Breathe. Doterra’s immune-boosting blend is called On Guard essential oil. On Guard Essential Oil (protective blend) is made of Orange, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Rosemary, and Eucalyptus radiata essential oils. Studies have shown that this blend is highly effective in not only killing bacteria and mold, but also viruses like the flu.

Did you know that viruses live inside of our cells and that most antibiotics cannot penetrate the cell wall? That is why our Doctors always tell us to go home and rest and let the virus run its course. But did you know that essential oils work differently and can actually get through the cell wall and kill the virus? Therefore, as soon as you feel like you are getting sick, start taking On Guard and you will stop any sickness in its tracks.

Now you may be asking – but how do I use On Guard?  On Guard is primarily used in three different ways: topically, internally, aromatically.

  1. Put 1-2 drops in 1oz glass of water. Gargle for 15 seconds and then swallow. Will help soothe a sore throat and boost your immune system. Repeat 4 times per day until you feel like you are back to 100% (must be glass or stainless steel cup)
  2. Rub 1-2 drops on the outside of your throat (sore throat). (Use as needed)
  3. Put 1-2 drops on the bottom of feet (up to 4 times per day) (Dilute with coconut oil on children)
  4. Put 4-8 drops in a diffuser. This will help to safely kill pathogens in the air. Think Lysol, but without the chemicals.

JUST BREATHE

This season has also been notable for stubborn respiratory issues that seem to stick around for weeks at a time.   Doterra’s Breathe (respiratory blend) is made of Peppermint, Lemon, Cardamom, Lauren Leaf, Eucalyptus radiate, Melaleuca, and Ravensara essential oils and is the perfect choice when looking for respiratory support. Not only is it super effective, but it smells and feels incredible!

The properties in Breathe essential oil have been studied for their ability to open airways and provide much needed relief.  Use Breathe if you are looking to open up your chest, loosen a cough, or clear your stuffy nose. There are two ways to use Breathe oil: topically or aromatically and both can be used as needed.Please note: Breathe cannot be taken internally.

  1. When using Breathe topically, simply rub 1-2 drops on your chest and/or back (can be diluted with fractionated coconut oil to help the oil spread)
  2. Can also apply 1-2 Breathe to the bottoms of the feet (dilute oil when using on children)
  3. Take 2 drops in your hands. Rub hands together. Take several deep breathes. Will immediately open up your airways.
  4. 4-8 drops in a diffuser overnight will help to keep your airways open while you sleep.

Just these two oils will keep you and your family out of the Doctor’s office this flu season!
