The Shame of Shaming

I recently had a patient come see me in my private practice who broke down into tears on my couch.  Her boyfriend of over 10 years calls her negative names and makes her feel ashamed of the recent weight gain she’s experienced in the past few years due to stress.  In addition to being frustrated with her weight, she now has uncontrolled diabetes and feels completely hopeless.  It absolutely broke my heart to hear the things she told me. One Meal, Two Proteins

How do you and your significant other handle a house divided? For me and the Mr, this comes into play with our football team loyalties. My South Jersey Boy loves his E-A-G-L-E-S, while I root for the Big Blue. Two days a year we can’t watch football in our own home, so we go to “Neutral Territory” (aka. the local sports bar) for game watching. That’s the compromise we made Year One. Likewise, when a major shift in eating habits come into play, you and your significant other need to be in communication with how you’ll work that out. Hopefully you’ll find your own Neutral Territory.

Yesterday I posted about my experience following a vegan diet for a month. I have the upmost respect for those who choose to be strictly vegan.  A vegan diet was strongly enforced as part of my yoga teacher training for ethical reasons.  However, I did a lot of soul searching and meditation during this time to reflect if I could realistically continue being vegan after training was over.  And here is where I am at this point in my life. My 30-Day Venture into Veganism: Part 1

In February I attended an intensive 10-day yoga teacher training. As part of the training we were strongly encouraged to follow a vegan diet in the month preceding and during the training days. As a semi-vegetarian most of my life where I’ve cut out beef and pork due to personal preference, I didn’t think I’d have too much trouble. I mean, hey, I always treat myself to the local vegan spot whenever the Mr goes out of town. But you learn quickly how animal-based foods play a prominent role in the foods we eat. And I also soon began to miss those foods in my life.

Putting the “Habit” in Cohabitation

The decision to live together with your significant other is life-changing.
